Best Lice Shampoo For Children

An all natural lice shampoo and good nit comb is the best way to handle a lice outbreak.

A search for the best lice shampoo will bring up many different options and the key is knowing which product will work the best for your child’s lice problem.

Just yesterday our 6-year old came home with a note from the school. One of her school mates came down with head lice and immediately we were worried about our daughter as any parent would. We quickly checked her scalp and luckily there were no signs of lice but the thoughts of prevention started to run through our heads as you never know when an issue like this will pop up. At this point, considering she does not have lice, we decided to not do anything and just keep our eyes on her until the school notifies us there are no more issues.

But what if you find out your child has head lice infestation? Well, there are a number of products on the market including some very effective natural head lice shampoo products that you should probably consider. Anti lice shampoo is normally the way to go and if you can find one that doesn’t have harsh chemicals and pesticides (Nix and Rid) or does damage to your child’s hair or skin, that is obviously the better option. Here are some of the more popular options when it comes to head lice treatment and shampoos and some links as to finding them online.

Best Option:

Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel Shampoo – At just over $20, this is one of the better priced and more effective lice shampoo options for children. It’s a very mild shampoo which means it’s perfect to use every day and it contains natural ingredients like lavender and rosemary to repel the lice. Some lice shampoos are very harsh and have a terrible chemical smell but the Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel Shampoo has a very pleasant herbal smell that is not overpowering and kids will love it. A large majority of the reviews online are positive with one person in particular discussing how a friend’s daughter was the only child in her daycare not to contract lice because they used the Fairy Tales shampoo on their daughter. Definitely the best of the anti lice shampoo products on the market, albeit a little expensive when you’re used to spending $3-5 per bottle for regular shampoo. Small price to pay in my opinion.

Other Options:

LiceLogic Head Lice Treatment Shampoo – LiceLogic has also come out with a very effective shampoo that is all natural and actually destroys the head lice and eggs on contact. The manufacturer recommends the daily use of the shampoo and also use of a Nit-Free comb which is a very popular method of clearing lice from the hair and scalp region. This particular shampoo has a peppermint scent as one of the main ingredients is all natural peppermint oil. Again the reviews are mostly positive with many being happy about the pleasing peppermint smell, the effectiveness at instantly treating lice and the price which is very reasonable at just under $35.00/bottle. There were some reviewers who had issues with customer service but if you buy the product from a reputable online retailer like Amazon.com you should have very little issues.

Licenders Head Lice Shampoo – Sticking with the theme of all natural, the Licenders shampoo uses all natural enzymes to kill lice on contact and has also been hailed as a very effecitve and gentle solution. You may see Licenders used in salons for lice treatment but I can tell you that using that salon service will set you back quite a bit of money (sometimes into the hundreds of dollars.) Buying the shampoo and doing home treatments is definitely the cheaper way to go and, although this is not the cheapest anti lice shampoo on the market, it’s definitely one of the best lice shampoo options out there at around $30.00/bottle. The drawback (which is a drawback for all of these shampoos) is that you probably will not get out the not (lice eggs) as the shampoo is designed to tackle the active lice issue. Wanna get rid of the nit? Get the comb below too.

Nit Free Terminator Lice Comb – I know we’ve been talking about lice shampoo but in order to make your treatments effective you really should purchase a Nit Free Terminator Lice Comb and use it in conjunction with your shampoo regimen. Lice eggs (which are called nits) are very tiny and sometimes can be tough to find on your child’s head as their color (tan, brown) tend to blend in very well. The problem with the Lice nit is that you can’t just brush or shake them out easily which is why a special comb is needed to do the job. Most reviewers will tell you that getting the nit out is as important as shampooing regularly with a good lice prevention shampoo. The Nit Free Terminator Lice Comb is probably the more popular choice and at only $10-12 it’s worth purchasing if you’re going to be buying the lice shampoo online too.

There are definitely some good options here and the good thing is that you don’t have to search through 50 different options to find the right solution as there are only a few really good anti lice shampoo’s on the market that are made of natural ingredients. I would only consider a pesticide or chemical if it was the very last resort and my child’s doctor insisted it was the right thing to do. That would have to be a drastic situation though and I think 99% of the lice issues out there can be solved with a good shampoo and lice comb and a little bit of vigilance and patience.
