WHAT IS FIFTH DISEASE

Fifths Disease is a Viral illness caused by a virus call Parvovirus B19. It tends to be a mild virus with some minor irritations such as headache, fever and rash. Because the symptoms are so common among many other illnesses, many don’t even know they’ve been infected when they do have it.

SYMPTOMS OF FIFTH DISEASE

– Fever for several days
– After the fever breaks, a red rash can develop on the face and cheeks.
– Over the next few days the rash will spread over the rest of the body.
– Eventually the rash goes away on it’s own and the child is fine.

COMPLICATIONS OF FIFTH DISEASE

There are few issue or complications unless the child has an immune system issue which can affect red blood count.

PREVENTION OF FIFTH DISEASE

In most cases, the disease cannot be prevented. There are currently no vaccines to prevent or reduce the severity of the disease either and most medications are given simply to treat the symptoms. The best course of action when a child (or adult) contracts Fifth Disease is to take the advice of doctors on prevention of colds and flu and that is to wash hands and face often, being sure to cough and sneeze into your sleeve (not in hands or with uncovered mouth) and eating healthy.

Also, once you have Fifth Disease you will not get it again.
